![]() ![]() I had an extremely slow-dawning insight about creation. ![]() Is there a bar near the stage? Can you put it in your pocket? Do girls like it? Is it affordable?”Īmong the book’s most fascinating insights is a counterintuitive model for how creativity works, from a chapter titled “Creation in Reverse” - a kind of reformulation of McLuhan’s famous aphorism “the medium is the message” into a somewhat less pedantic but no less purposeful “the medium shapes the message”: Or, as Byrne puts it, “how music might be molded before it gets to us, what determines if it gets to us at all, and what factors external to the music itself can make it resonate for us. But rather than an autobiographical work, a prescriptive guide to how to listen, or another neuropsychological account of music, what unfolds is a blend of social science, history, anthropology, and media theory, exploring how context shapes the experience and even the nature of music. Vincent (which made a cameo on Literary Jukebox), and now the release of How Music Works ( public library) - a fascinating record of his lifetime of curiosity about and active immersion in music. Great times and tall deeds for David Byrne this week: First his fantastic collaborative album with St. ![]() ![]() ![]() That was the first and last time I went on a camping holiday of my own free will, and The Crystal Cave did a lot to make the experience bearable, by taking me away from it completely. My favourite is The Crystal Cave, which I first read lying fully dressed in a sleeping-bag, in a tent in mid-Wales, in the March snow, desperately trying to finish the book before the light went, or my torch battery went. I’ll have to go and buy it now, * but I do know that it’s about the finding of the Holy Grail. I think this must be because I bought the other four novels in one go, and this last one was published after that, and I simply didn’t notice. The fifth novel, The Prince and the Pilgrim, I haven’t actually read, and I didn’t even know it existed until I started researching this pod. The following four are The Hollow Hills (in which Arthur grows up and comes to his kingdom), The Last Enchantment (the early years of Arthur’s reign, still struggling against the Saxons), and The Wicked Day (the story of Mordred, given a rather sympathetic twist). Mary Stewart wrote a magical series of five Arthur novels, starting with The Crystal Cave, and the life of Merlin. ![]() She died in 2014, which came as a shock to me. I had been living in the same time as one of my favourite authors, and never had the gumption to write her a letter? Fool. We’ve reached the point in this recap of Really Like This Book podcast scripts about King Arthur when we really have to talk about Mary Stewart. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Correspondingly, you don’t allow the bewildered herd to become participants in action. You don’t give a three-year-old that kind of freedom because the three-year-old doesn’t know how to handle that freedom. It’s pretty much the same logic that says that it would be improper to let a three-year-old run across the street. We have to tame the bewildered herd, not allow the bewildered herd to rage and trample and destroy things. Therefore, it would be immoral and improper to permit them to do this. If they try to participate in managing their own affairs, they're just going to cause trouble. The compelling moral principle is that the mass of the public are just too stupid to be able to understand things. There’s even a kind of compelling moral principle behind it. ![]() ![]() Darren sees the ‘freaks’ and their gifts-from a man that can eat more than any human, to the wolf-man, who is half human, half wolf, but mainly beast. One of the earliest attempts at a genuinely scientific understanding of politics and society in their modern form, this book also remains one of the most stimulating. ![]() Even today, Hobbes's thesis in Leviathan is debated among scholars and philosophy aficionados around the globe. To Hobbes, the leviathan - a mythical sea creature described in the Old Testament - represented his central thesis: that the state must be strong in order to control and protect its citizens.
