Fortunately, he’s written more than a couple continuations that will link together into a handy packaged bind-up. We need something big and beefy to show that we’re Serious About Literature even as we read about murderous insane girls. It’s the twenty-first century now, and no self-respecting teen would be caught dead reading a pocket-sized paperback. So if Simon & Schuster is going back to the well for Pike’s vampire books, what’s stopping them from bringing back other stories from their one-time best-selling young adult author? Form factor, perhaps. ![]() ![]() One night, in a phosphorescent sea, he marveled at the sight of some whales spouting luminous water and later, lying on the deck of his boat, gazing at the immense, starry sky, the tiny mouse Amos, a little speck of a living thing in the vast living universe, felt thoroughly akin to it all. Amos, a seaside mouse filled with an explorer’s curiosity, builds a boat, loads it with provisions (this catalogue of goods-including biscuits, acorns, honey, and a yo-yo-is the children’s favorite part) and sails away. This book is no exception, and it is a joy in every way. There is definitely more to this mystery than what is revealed to her - and it doesn't concern just herself. In Kamihama City Iroha runs into Momoko Togame, Yachiyo, Mitama Yakumo (aka Coordinator), Kaede Akino, and Rena - all of whom resemble the magical girl cast of 'Madoka Magica', without being the same characters exactly. Iroha's goal is to track down a tiny Kyubey who may be the key to everything she wants to know. So naturally there are a lot of other magical girls there. The answers may lie in Kamihama City, which is very dangerous territory for magical girls as it contains a slew of strong witches and familiars. She has parents, a seemingly normal life, pink hair, and an awesome transformation outfit and she is trying to uncover the meaning behind her dreams of a little girl she can't remember ever knowing. Iroha Tamaki is an established magical girl. I was trying to decide whether or not I wanted to read this and I saw an interview where the author implied the book was an apologia for Christopher Columbus: ![]() The narrative is woven between the thread of Emilio’s recovery post-mission and the thread of time leading up to and including the mission. We’re told right from the beginning that horrible, scarring things happened to Emilio and everybody else died. The main characters are Emilio, a Cuban Jesuit priest, Jimmy, a physicist at SETI, Anne, a friend and pupil of Emilio’s, and Sofia, a Sephardic Jewish computer scientist. The Sparrow is about a Jesuit mission to an alien planet called Rakhat. On the other hand, this is a first contact story with religious themes, so I was kind of intrigued… ![]() I got in the habit of tuning out Christian stuff by skipping out on Christmas plays in elementary school. I’m Jewish and not terribly religious, so when I hear a book is about Catholic priests, I’m immediately turned off. If this book wasn’t chosen for book club, I would have never picked it up. ![]() |
